Proper candle care is important in order to maximize the burn of your candle and the enjoyment you receive. Here are a few helpful tips to ensure you get the most out of your new Proper Candle.
- Always keep your candles within line of sight when burning, away from flammable household items, and out of reach/disturbance of children and pets.
- Be sure to keep the melted wax pool free of debris and foreign items that may interact negatively with the melted wax and/or flame.
- Always trim your wick to approximately 1/4 inch from the candle surface prior to each burn. This helps keeps the flame at the appropriate level and will prolong the total burn life of the candle (approximately 50 hours for our nine ounce soy candle).
- Burn candles on a heat-resistant surface and away from open windows and drafty areas.
- Where possible, allow candles to burn between 3 to 4 hours each time for maximal scent dispersion and even burning, but no more than 4 hours.
When lighting your candle for the first time, it will take about two hours for the flame to melt soy wax all the way to the edge; once this is accomplished, the soy wax will melt pretty clean on the edges on every burn thereafter. If you don't follow this rule of thumb, your jar will have wax along the sides and each burn thereafter will just follow that path. Anything remaining on the sides is just wasted candle that you should be enjoying. Remember: first burn - two hours minimum and always only four hours maximum for any candle you burn. The glass just gets too hot and could potentially crack and leave you with a big mess. Follow the 2/4 Rule!
Soy wax is extracted from soybeans, while paraffin wax is derived from crude oil. What is crude oil? Petroleum. What is petroleum? A fossil fuel, like coal and natural gas. Soy wax candles generate up to 50% less heat when burned, because, well...it's not a fuel-based wax. When petroleum-based candles are burned, carcinogenic chemicals such as benzene, toluene and formaldehyde are released. I don't know about you, but I don't want that stuff in my respiratory system or on my skin or hair. Soybean derived wax provides a slower burning candle which ultimately gives you more time to enjoy it. And of course, no toxins are emitted into the air, making them an excellent choice for burning indoors.
Hot Throw: The term used to describe the strength of fragrance while a candle is burning. This evaluation is typically done after the candle has been burning for at least two hours but no more than four.
Cold Throw: In contrast, describes the strength of fragrance before a candle has been burned for the first time. It’s commonly said that cold throw wins customers, while hot throw keeps them coming back.
The Proper Candle does not use lids on our tumblers simply because, well, they aren't really needed. We keep the price low by eliminating unnecessary expenses and we are an eco-friendly company that just doesn't want to add to the already devasted landfills.
Like any soft product, please do not leave your lip balm in direct sunlight or a hot car, although it can become very soft, it will reform to its original texture once moved to a cool temperature. Your product will not be effected by the change in temperature once cooled.
